The six day event, which is a thought-provoking leadership conference, was held in Karachi, and some 300 students participated from 65+ cities & villages.

Mobilink sponsored 18 ambitious female participants belonging to far flung areas, such as Larkana, Ghotki, Nawabshah and Jahurabad etc. These young girls were chosen based on their passion and aspiration to make a difference in the community around them.

In addition to mentoring sessions for participants held by the Mobilink team. A Key Note Session – Drop the Gender Mask – was also conducted by representatives of Mobilink. Participants were made aware of gender equality and inclusion at the workplace, and highlighted Mobilink’s efforts across all fronts.

Mobilink and Warid will benefit from VimpelCom’s USD 1 billion investment into building one of the largest and most ambitious IT infrastructures in the industry. The Group’s new digital systems will enable faster roll-out of new local products and services, particularly in the areas of mobile entertainment, communications, the Internet of Things, and mobile financial services.

Through this, Pakistan’s digital development will be elevated to the next level, further reducing the digital divide. VimpelCom, GTH and Dhabi Group announced the agreement to combine their Pakistan telecommunication businesses on 26 November 2015.

The completion of the transaction follows regulatory approval2 from all the relevant authorities and the subsequent exchange of shares. Mobilink has completed the acquisition of 100 percent of Warid’s shares, and the Dhabi Group Shareholders have acquired 15 percent of the shares of Mobilink.

With the completion of the merger transaction, Mobilink now enters the next major phase of its transformation and Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Hedberg will hand over the CEO role of Mobilink and Warid to Aamir Ibrahim, currently Chief Commercial Officer and Deputy CEO of Mobilink. Aamir will drive forward and execute the Mobilink and Warid integration, supported by a world-class transformation team from the VimpelCom Group.

Mobilink’s turnaround over the past two years has shown significant improvements in service revenue growth (from -5% to +12% year on year), ARPU (from -11% to +15% year on year) and increased EBITDA margins (from -3 p.p. to +4 p.p year on year). With effect from today, the Mobilink board is chaired by His Highness Sheikh Nahyan Mubarak Al Nahyan, with Jon Eddy as Vice Chairman and consists of five other directors nominated by VimpelCom and GTH.

The Warid board is chaired by His Highness Sheikh Nahyan Mubarak Al Nahyan, with Jon Eddy as Vice Chairman and consists of three other directors nominated by VimpelCom and GTH. On conclusion of the legal merger, the combined entity will have a single board and management structure.

Aamir Ibrahim becomes the CEO of both Mobilink and Warid.Andrew Kemp, the current CFO of Mobilink, will also assume the Warid CFO role.

The legal merger of the two companies, which will result in one merged legal entity having the same board, and management described above, is expected to be completed within approximately six months, subject to the ful-filment of the required legal processes in Pakistan.

Mobilink and Warid will shortly file a petition to the Islamabad High Court in order to commence the process of legal merger. As previously stated, the transaction is expected to create capex and opex synergies with a net present value of approximately USD 500 million with an annual run rate of well over USD 100 million of free cash flow improvements by year three. The combined revenue of both companies for the 12 months to March 2016 was USD 1.4 billion4.

JazzCash to Offer a One-Touch Solution for Ticket Purchase at Cinepax

JazzCash and Cinepax Cinemas have signed an agreement, whereby all Cinepax Cinemas are now powered by JazzCash’s Payment Gateway. A digital solution to the trials and tribulations of traditional cinema ticket purchasing, it allows moviegoers the convenience of buying tickets by visiting Cinepax’s website or mobile app, booking their tickets and paying through their JazzCash account.

Speaking on the occasion, Aniqa Afzal Sandhu, Head of Digital & Mobile Financial Services – Mobilink, stated,

“This cinema ticketing service is an answer to the prayers of cinema goers. It provides movie buffs with easy access to booking seats for their favorite movies from the comfort of their homes. Once customers purchase the ticket using JazzCash, they can just walk to a dedicated kiosk in Cinepax Cinemas to enter their booking ID and get the print outs of tickets they paid for. Going forward, JazzCash and Cinepax are also planning to utilize JazzCash’s NFC payment facilities for ticket purchasing.

Mobilink Partners with QMobile to Launch Two Jazz X 3G Smartphones

Keeping in line with its strategy of vertical integration and introducing economical devices to expedite the market uptake of high-speed mobile internet, Mobilink has partnered Q Mobile to release two new Jazz X Smartphones – JS-1 and JS-7. Q Mobile, under this agreement, will not only manufacture more Jazz X handsets for Mobilink, but also become the brand’s official distributor across Pakistan. Both Jazz X 3G Smartphones are aimed to cater different market segments with different features. Jazz Heat-wave Relief Camps Active for General Public in Collaboration with Voice of Karachi

To help the public combat extreme temperatures throughout Karachi, Mobilink’s umbrella brand – Jazz partnered with Voice of Karachi (VoK), an association working for the betterment of the city, to set up heat-wave relief camps at various spots in Karachi throughout the month of May.

Moreover, Jazz, in collaboration with the Islamic Relief, has also initiated a SMS based public service announcement (PSA) campaign to spread awareness about precautionary measures during this heat-wave emergency period. Under this campaign, the Telco brand sends out regular text messages to Karachiites featuring emergency numbers in case of a heat stroke, safety tips, and guidelines to nurse a heat stroke victim till help arrives, amongst other related topics.

Speaking about the need to assist the local government in ensuring safety of the public during the ongoing heat-wave, Omar Manzur, Head of Corporate Communications – Mobilink stated,

Our partnership with VoK looks to control the situation before it turns in to a calamity, as witnessed last year, when some 1500 citizens lost their lives from heat strokes.”

Each ‘Jazz Heat wave Relief Camp’ has two 220 liter cold water drums, a water cooler, wet towels, and packets of ORS. While the goods have been donated by Mobilink, its day to day management is under supervision of VoK’s administration.

During similar circumstances last year, Mobilink played its part in assisting heat wave affectees by distributing a total of 10,000 bottles of mineral water, 6000 boxes of juice, 4000 ice packs, 4000 hand sized towels and 40 cooling water fans amongst heat stroke patients, their families and administration staff at several hospitals of Karachi and Hyderabad.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (“PTA”) has today approved the merger of Pakistan Mobile Communication Limited (“Mobilink”) and Warid Telecom (Private) Limited (“Warid”)*. This is yet another milestone in the regulatory process and follows the approval granted in March, 2016 by the Competition Commission of Pakistan. The deal remains subject to further regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

Subsequent to the launch of Jazz as Mobilink’s umbrella brand, continuing the streak to re strategize its brands, Mobilink has now introduced ‘JazzCash’ as its brand name for Mobile Financial Services (MFS), Jazz Cash will replace Mobicash brand. This step is taken to further strengthen Jazz as a one-stop solution to cater the wider needs of subscribers in a digitally progressive modern-day world.

Mobilink vowing to its strategy of boosting Pakistan’s vibrant and emerging Tech ecosystem, is all set to establish Jazz’s ‘National Incubation Center’. NIC will  complement Government’s promise for a Digital Pakistan.  Center will be setup under the umbrella of National ICT R&D fund.

This incubation center will be first of its kind innovation hub aimed to nurture talent across Pakistan under ‘Jazz XLR8 Program’. The program will bridge the gap between Entrepreneurs, Innovators and Investors, while providing state-of-the-art incubation facilities and access to experts and advisors.
